I am copying and reposting a summary of last Thursday's NRC meeting as I saw it.
You missed a great show.
Round One brought dog bear hunters in one corner versus bait bear hunters in the other corner.
Round Two brought bass fishermen in one corner versus other bass fishermen in the other corner.
Round Three brought the Yoopers and the Ojibwas in one corner versus the Canadian mine owners in the other corner.
Nothing was going to be settled on any of the issues so we left about one third the way through the speakers in the Committee of the Whole.
A revised budget was shared due to the lower amount of funds that came in from licenses. More on the budget will come at another time. Hold on to your hats . . . a drum roll . . . The dnr blamed the loss on the . . . Weather! Now who would have seen that coming. What a shock that was!
The Deer Management Plan will be updated. There is suppose to be a lot of opportunity for public feedback as the process continues. There was no mention of what any content or change might be.
There were several innuendos concerning crossbows being responsible for losses to the deer herd in various areas of the state including the UP. The dnr also stated that deer sightings were up this last season in the UP according to a dnr survey of UP hunt clubs. They did mention that fewer clubs were surveyed this year. So much for the value of the survey. Deer data by Mason contradicted itself again and again and again and . . .
Bear numbers are down even though bear numbers are up? We need more bigger bears to have better quality bear hunting. (Does that sound familiar?)
The Bear bait guides are responsible for the fact that bear dog guides are losing money and are seeing fewer bears.
It came out at the meeting that the Ojibwas have filed suit against the state and the dnr for violating the treaty that gave them use of the land for eternity that the mine company wants. The Yoopers came out in force on that issue and on the bear issue. It was standing room only at one point. The Yoopers seemed very much against the mine at least until the point at which we left.
[DIRECTOR CREAGH APPROVED THE GRAYMONT PROPOSAL AFTER WE LEFT to my surprise!] See the previous thread concerning this item in this section for more information.
