Can you believe it's almost August? If you feel like summer zipped past you, now is the time to get out and enjoy those last few weeks! Here's what's going on in Michigan state parks this August:
Enjoy Meteors & S'mores during the Perseid Meteor Shower, August 9-16

Enjoy Meteors & S'mores during the Perseid Meteor Shower, August 9-16
Grab a blanket and visit a state park August 9-16 to enjoy one of the biggest and most visible astronomical events of the year: the Perseid Meteor Shower.
Some state parks in Michigan are staying open late and offering “Meteors & S’mores” events in honor of this natural light show. Many of these events feature astronomy presentations, as well as—you guessed it—s’mores! A few participating parks are even offering free movies to complement nature’s “light” show. The public is invited to grab a blanket, head to a park and enjoy the spectacular display of “falling stars” with family and friends.
Meteors & S’mores events are scheduled at the following state parks. Parks with an asterisk (*) next to their name are offering a free movie before the meteor shower:
Saturday, August 9
-Bald Mountain Recreation Area (Oakland), 9 p.m. (beach parking lot)
-Fort Wilkins Historic State Park (Keweenaw), 10 p.m.- (parade grounds) This program features guest speaker Joel Kimball, professor at the South Dakota School of Mining and Technology

Volunteers pull invasive species
Volunteer with DNR Stewardship team to protect natural areas
Michigan's natural resources are treasured by many, but they must be actively protected if we want to continue enjoying them.The stewardship unit of the DNR is seeking volunteers to help remove invasive plants from Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These activities are a great way to enjoy time outdoors in the summer while helping to restore woodlands, prairies and wetlands. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.
-August 2: Highland Recreation Area (Oakland), 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
-August 3: Pinckney Recreation Area (Washtenaw), 10 a.m. -1 p.m.
-August 3: Algonac State Park (St. Clair), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
-August 6: Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
-August 9: Bald Mountain Recreation Area (Oakland) 9 a.m.-noon
-August 10: Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
-August 12: Holland State Park (Ottawa), noon-3 p.m.
-August 16: Belle Isle Park (Wayne), 9 a.m.-noon
-August 16: Fort Custer Recreation Area (Kalamazoo), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
-August 17: Pinckney Recreation Area (Washtenaw), 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Volunteers should bring work gloves, drinking water and appropriate clothing for outdoor work, including long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Long-sleeved shirts are recommended when pulling spotted knapweed.

Celebrate Threatened & Endangered Species Week August 4-10
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Michigan's Endangered Species Act, a piece of legislation that has helped preserve and manage many rare species throughout the state.
The DNR is recognizing this important milestone with Threatened & Endangered Species Week, August 4-10. This week will feature educational programming to help people understand and get involved with protection of threatened and endangered species. Hikes, guided activities and more will be offered all over the state.
