The United States Department of Agriculture recently released a 5-year strategy to provide cohesion and share information to assist in efforts to battle the invasive spotted lanternfly. Since its discovery in Pennsylvania in 2014, the lanternfly has been detected in 13 additional states, including a small population in Michigan's Oakland County in 2022 that has since been removed. Spotted lanternfly is currently on Michigan's Invasive Species Watchlist. The 5-year strategy has goals to limit the spread of the spotted lanternfly, respond quickly to new discoveries, support scientific research on management and establish consistent messaging to the public and industries that could be affected by outbreaks. Learn more about the spotted lanternfly management strategy. This species is dangerous to a variety of fruit and nut bearing hardwoods. editor]
