GLADWIN COUNTY, MI -- A 58-year-old woman died Saturday evening after the ATV she was atop went through the ice on Lake Lancer in Butman Township, police said.
Deputies were called out around 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 to investigate a complaint of a vehicle going through the ice on the lake near the intersection of Butman and Grass Lake roads.
A 2018 Can-Am Side by Side operated by 63-year-old Gladwin County resident David McCloe went into the icy lake waters. McCloe was able to free himself from the vehicle, but Monica Johnson was not able to reach the surface.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
McCloe told deputies he was in the water for approximately 20 minutes and yelling for help before being pulled out of the water by an unknown man. He was transported by ambulance to MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin for treatment.
The Gladwin County Sheriff's Office offered a reminder to residents that there is no safe ice and operating a motor vehicle on the ice is never safe.
"Individuals who choose to drive or ride in a motor vehicle on the ice should take extra safety precaution and have a plan of action in place in the event the vehicle does go through the ice," reads a news release on the incident.
