THREE RIVERS, MI -- Roger Rathburn got up early Dec. 26 to spend time with his family, in town for Christmas, then went to the golf course where he was a part owner to trim trees.
He was working to make a better view of a nearby river, a friend said.
It was no surprise to his brother, Rusty Rathburn, because his older brother put his all into everything he did and the golf course was no exception.
Tragically, Roger Rathbrn, 55, died after falling from a ladder 15 to 20 feet in the air as he was trimming tree branches at the Sauganash Golf Course, his brother said.
"It looks like the tree limb he was cutting, it gave way and knocked the ladder out and he fell 15 to 20 feet onto his head," Rathburn said. He landed on a cart path below.
Rusty Rathburn said his brother originally hired a tree-trimming company to do the work, but cancelled when a bucket truck broke. Roger Rathburn ordered a safety harness, but it was delayed in the mail because of the holidays, his brother said."

I am not casting stones as I broke my hip, back, and shoulder when I fell from a ladder while working in a tree in my backyard. It should be a real warning to everyone to use a safety line/harness when going up a tree for any reason.

I am in golf course maint. and construction. I heard of this, sad. This trade can be very dangerous. Seems no 2 jobs are the same and coming up with custom solutions to a wide variety of problems and ideas. Sometimes is a breeding ground for danger.
