New Regulations for Late Goose Season
Canada geese, white-fronted geese (or specklebellies) and brant are now part of a dark goose aggregate daily bag limit. After Sept. 30, the daily limit for dark geese is five, only three of which can be Canada geese and one of which can be a brant.
In simpler terms, after Sept. 30, hunters can harvest five dark geese per day; however, only three can be Canada geese, and only one can be a brant. Three Canada geese can be harvested daily after Sept. 30, and the remainder of the aggregate daily bag limit can be filled with two white-fronted geese or a white-fronted goose and a brant.
Late December Duck Hunting Opportunities in Middle and South Zones
Middle Zone: Dec. 16 - 17
South Zone: Dec. 30 - 31
The regular waterfowl season continues in the middle and south zones for two days later in December. During this season, hunters may take up to six ducks of any species each day. Certain species have daily limits – hunters may take no more than four mallards (two may be hens), three wood ducks, three scaup, two redheads, one pintail, two canvasbacks and two black ducks for their bag each day. In addition to the duck limit, hunters may take five mergansers, only two of which may be hooded mergansers.
Waterfowl hunting regulations and bag limits can be found in the 2017-2018 Michigan Waterfowl Hunting Digest. Digests are available at DNR Operation Service Centers, wildlife field offices and license agents or on the web at www.michigan.gov/waterfowl.
Wetland Wonders Challenge Reminder
Hunters, there’s still time to enter the Consumers Energy-sponsored Wetland Wonders Challenge this waterfowl season. The contest began Oct. 14 and runs until Feb. 15, 2018. One lucky winner will take home a War Eagle boat, motor and trailer!
The contest takes place at Michigan’s Wetland Wonders, or the seven managed waterfowl hunt areas located across southern Michigan. When hunters register at any of these areas, they will receive a validation on their Wetland Wonders Challenge punch card (available at all managed waterfowl hunt areas). To be entered, participants must hunt at three of the seven southern Michigan Wetland Wonders and submit a punch-card entry form.
Seven lucky winners will be chosen. One grand prize winner will win a War Eagle boat, motor and trailer. Six additional winners will win a duck hunting prize package, with Avian X duck and goose decoys, Zink custom duck and goose calls, a shotgun, and additional waterfowl hunting gear. All seven winners will take home a "golden ticket," good for one first-choice pick at a managed waterfowl area drawing (non-reserved) for the 2018-19 waterfowl hunting season. Contest partner Michigan United Conservation Clubs will select winners on March 1, 2018.
