Lakes are ice covered around here at the tip of the mitt . Drive by Crooked every day on my way to and from radiation therapy and it has been iced over for several days but haven't seen any one out on it yet. Carp lake is the same way . I personally walked out a ways on Maple Bay today and the ice was very stable , however although there is ice out as far as I could see there is also a change in it you can see out about a half mile or so where the ice had broken up in the high winds a couple days ago and then refroze . I did not go out near that far but with the temps being as cold as they have been I would bet people will be out on the ice this weekend .

There are some new rules governing ice shanties. They are probably in the reports or news section somewhere. This could be another year where a shanty is certainly needed. We are getting blowing and drifting snow with some ice underneath at the moment. I would say that we have 5-6 inches of snow.
Enjoy the new shanty!

Guys are out a couple hundred yards fishing on Maple Bay . The ice gets pretty iffy further out than that . Has been a snowmobile out on crooked and some foot traffic off of Oden but did not stop and check it out . Was told as of Sat that no one had tried going out on Carp Lake off the boat ramp right in downtown Carp Lake .

Almost done with the ice shack . Got the door and floor to do yet . The boy has been helping me but still can only do a bit at a time . Got a small wood stove to put in it ( have it in my one deer blind right now ). Will have lots of room and warmth just need to decide what lake to put it on !

It looks like it will have plenty of room. Will you be spearing out of it?
Our weather has warmed up a little so I am not sure how good the ice is down here.

No I don't plan on doing any spearing although would be no problem using it for that. There were people out fishing on the ice around here before the slight warm up . I don't think it hurt the ice any just melted the snow off of it . It got cold again last night and it looks like it is thicker than before although it is smooth now. I will be done with radiation the end of the month and then I plan on getting out . I am buying an old snow machine from a buddy so I can get to what ever spot I want to . Did a little more work on getting the floor done today .

Was a portable way out on crooked yesterday and today I checked Maple bay and one guy was all the way out fishing . Forecast is for it to get real cold so ice will be getting thick.

The ice should be good as even the river about one mile from our house is freezing over. However this old duffer wouldn't be caught ice fishing right now unless someone had a furnace in their ice shanty!

I plan on putting my small wood stove in my shanti Havent got much more done on it though with everything else going on . Was -8 here this morning and didn't get above 0 till around noon . Went down to 2 (rom 7 ) as soon as the sun started going down then it warmed up a degree now that the clouds and a little bit more snow has moved in . They say even a little colder this weekend so I will see if I make it out with the portable ( with propane heater ). have my last radiation treatment tomorrow morning and then an MRI tomorrow night . Should be clear from all the Dr. stuff for at least a couple weeks and then it should be just an appointment/test here and there. That is unless they push physical therapy once the MRI results come back .

It was -15 degrees at our house this morning. I think the ice should be safe.

Trucks driving on Carp lake and with temps forecast to not get above zero for two days this week the ice is just getting thicker . Got the ice shack just about done . Still have to get the stove in it and I have some 1/4 inch pink board insulation I want to also get put in it and get the lettering on all sides . Up in the air on if I get out with the portable tomorrow with 30+ MPH winds forecast. Will have to access the weather in the morning.

Well I foolishly went out in this crap , nasty getting out and back in . Winds were as high as 38 mph while I was out there and in the 30's the rest of the time. Got one perch some dink perch and had something big that broke my line . Was out for about 4 1/2 hrs. Lots of big drifts were on the lake and many places with a lot of slush underneath . Was not a pleasant day but I made it out for the first time this year . Don't know if I have it in me to go tomorrow and after that it is supposed to get brutally cold .

That is tough going for anyone. My inclination would be to wait for the weather to break even if that takes a couple or 3 weeks. This ice will not go anywhere fast.

Wow what a change ! The boy and I went out to Maple Bay a few days ago and the snow drifts and pockets of slush were bad . Was real discouraging also as the fish just didn't want to bite . I did have one big fish right off that broke my line and then just one small perch Now today I decided to go out after crappie and the snow is completely gone on the lake I went to with lots of water on top . Didn't take any creepers so it was tough to walk and even stand still to drill holes . Spent three hrs seriously fishing and got eight nice crappie . They were tough to coax into biting and they were not schooled up much at all. Spent a couple hrs just puttering around other spots on the lake just looking to see if any other spot might be better for future fishing (or the shanti )and didn't find any thing but I drilled a couple holes right off the launch and added one more crappie to the catch Was getting discouraged with going out twice and nothing much to show for it so today was a good day. Sat there is a fishing tournament on Carp lake and I am thinking on going out there just for the heck of it . Rarely fish that lake and so not expecting to do much but even though it looks to be pretty cold there is not supposed to be much wind and without snow on the ice it should be easy going getting out on it to fish for the day.

Went out with a couple guys to the fishing contest that was supposed to be last weekend but guys got the date wrong on carp lake . Not something to do to be competitive but rather something to hang out and BS . However Tim ( one of the guys I went with ) got a 10 lb pike and took first with it ($300 ) and the other guy got a walleye 3.24 lbs and took second in the walleye division ( buddy heater ) I got a pike right around 24 in and a perch to go with it andthe other two guys also getting a perch each . Funny that even though the one guy dose fish that lake some he really doesn't know the best spots to fish. So we kind of drove off in a spot where nobody was and said this looks as good a spot as any other Even though it is the first fishing contest I have ever entered and I didn't place with any thing I caught I have to say we did pretty good

I am glad that you had a good time and caught some fish. More than a few guys are having to be rescued down here and some have drowned. Jumping cracks, driving in front of dams, and over springs is not a good idea with this warming weather down here.

Tons of ice here still and was still making ice first thing this morning . Trucks out on the lake we were on and even a motorcycle running around out there The boy was here waiting for me to get home and grabbed my gear and leftover bait and went out to maple bay for the evening . He said there were trucks out on the ice there also . We had the big warmup and that melted the snow on the ice then it got below zero for a couple or more nights and it really made ice . Has to be close to 20 inches if not more right now . Although we are supposed to get a bunch of wet snow on Monday and that will make a mess of things regardless of how thick it is right now with water being pushed up onto the ice under the heavy snow . Hopefully the cold weather right behind the snow will be enough to freeze that slush back up.

Well the boy and I finally got the shanti out on the ice . We put it on the lake we catch the crappie on . Took my sister and niece from South Carolina out to it the other day and did catch three crappie . Then went out last evening to put some 2x4s under it to keep it from freezing to the ice and banked snow up around it to keep the wind we have been getting from getting under it . Only fished a short time but managed to get a couple before dark . been a strange year as the crappie are not schooled up for some reason so sitting in one spot is not the best way to go about it .
