I have brought this topic up before and now the jesterly Tony Smith has brought it up again in his attempt to ridicule Ridge on the MI unsportman site. He writes, " Is the restricted tag (4 pts on one antler) handicapping not only those with physical limitations, but everyone and anyone that hunts in the northern zones?'
Why did the MIDNR require two different proposals when the blockbuster LIMPD's tried their failed attempt at governing?
Because antler development is slower in the northern DMU's. There are some nice bucks in zone 2, no doubt. But, there are more 2 1/2 yr old deer in that zone that do NOT meet the 4 point restriction. The MIDNR thinks so, hence the 3 point threshold.
Tony probably shouldn't open that can of worms.

In reply to Tony's thread and remarks, I started another thread because his was locked. (It seems that site does not want threads that eventually put MAPRs in a bad light which Tony's eventually did.) I expect mine to be locked before it gets very far.
A Miracle in a Deer Blind
Discussion in 'Deer Hunting Regulations, Proposals, and Law Debat' started by ridgewalker, 9 minutes ago
This is a story that I wrote some time ago and that I have read to the NRC. It is about an autistic child and his physically challenged father. While I could not write the entire story here, I will try to fill in the basics. This father-son team was in one of our blinds one opening morning. The weather was warm and the father took a little nap. Proceeding ahead with the story, a forkhorn stepped through some small pines and the autistic child said to his father, "Burger buck, shoot, shoot!" Those were the first words that the youngster ever spoke. The father, who normally was a VAPR hunter shot the buck. The boy was so excited that he began celebrating and saying words of joy not even realizing what he was doing. The weeping father said that was the best trophy that he ever took and that he would never worry about APRs again. The youngster's grandfather who was hunting a little over a 100 yards away heard the commotion and came over to see what was happening and joined in the moment. The grandfather has one arm and rarely takes a deer but he was much happier than if had taken a deer.
Challenged/disabled hunters do not ask for exceptions or special treatment. They just want a fair chance or opportunity to take a buck or a deer. At our camp we have had the privilege of working with disabilities of all types. There have been more than a few miracles and a lot of smiles.
For most disabled hunters they are very limited in movement in some way. Some have to hunt with someone else. Many have to be driven to a blind and cannot get very far into the woods. There are no nearby ag areas no do we have large food plots or above legal bait piles for them. Most hunt a runway in a blind that has been there for years.
The restricted tag on the combo license offers them the continued opportunity to hunt if they choose to use the option of buying a combo as it does everyone. They still have the first tag that gives them a reasonable chance at taking a buck/deer. Due to the size of the herd as I perceive it, we normally limit the doe shoot to 3. MAPRs would severely limit the chances of these folks in getting a buck/deer. In this sandy northern woods seeing a buck with 3 points on one side is rare except at a distance for these challenged folks. They simply cannot get close to the cover areas that protect those bucks. In spite what anyone thinks of me, these somewhat older bucks do take an extra year to grow that antler. Nutrition and climate do make a difference.
If MAPRs are enacted in this area, most if not all of our disabled hunters have stated that they will no longer hunt. We are considering turning our place into a camp like some others where these disabled folks can target shoot at our small range, can sit around a fire, and can tell stories of what it use to be like at hunting camp when miracles happened.

Get ready to be told your opinion is wrong, that those hunters will enjoy their hunting more with Maprs. The deer up in the pine dessert grow antlers just as those in the rich farmland, don't you know? I see OTC is claiming that buck I have taken pictures of the last 4 years is just 2 yrs old.
We are just big liars to these bigots.

All of those things have been said. Repeatedly they said I didn't know what I was talking about. The disabled-challenged would have a perfect world if MAPRs were enacted and other such drivel. The thread might be closed by now. A few were doing their best to get it closed with their writing. They can't stand a reasonable argument against their nonsense.

The problem here Ridge is that these a-holes making all of the commotion don't know what it is like. They only have to deal with those with special needs when someone brings it up in a discussion or one gets in front of them at the store. They think everyone's life is exactly like theirs with only a minor setback once in awhile. This world can be so cruel to those with special needs.

There were some replies from folks that had experience with challenged people that made some good posts and contributions. It is the few that have no clue and that know it all despite having never been there or never having tried to be a part of the disabled person's experience. MAPRs for all and all for MAPRs is their slogan. They should publish recipes for preparing their antlers!

You guys look foolish with all these assumptions. Look in the mirror Tom. No foolish accusations here, just one of those a-holes proving my point.

You guys look foolish with all these assumptions. Agreed. There are many of us, including myself, that have proposed that APR's should exempt disabled hunters, youth, and senior citizens. Yet, you read on here the constant anger driven class-envy drivel.

The only anger is that shown toward the MAPRs that will throw gasoline on the fires of disease. As to class-envy that is the most insane thing that I have ever read. Completely delusional assessments of what people have said. Yea, I've grown tired of it as well. I have nothing against you Ridge. You're completely entitled to your opinion, even if I disagree wholeheartedly. I will respect you as you've respected me. You will receive no personal name calling directed at you from me.

Let's get something straight. YOU are a guest on this site. You are allowed to post without joining because you keep coming back anyway after you are banned. This is a website for those that are against MAPRs. So you can keep calling me and Hartman out, but unless you have proof,.....
The bottom line is,from Dr Mason, NO NEW MAPRs until this little thing called CWD gets figured out. And he is on record saying CWD will be here for decades.
So we may have to change our objectives.
