Our family took its vacation the last two weeks of August on the shore of a small lake between Rose City and Mio. There is a really nice little bait shop north of Mio where we have been getting our bait and stocking up on last minute needs. This year we bought their baby crawlers, waxworms, and regular crawlers. The baby crawlers worked the best with the waxworms coming in second for panfish which were bluegill and perch. The regular crawlers occasionally worked for bass.
The panfish would come into 4 - 6 feet of water after 7 pm and stay there until dark or until the bass and pike chased them out. During the day I had a lot of trouble finding them. Once I found them on a drop off from 5 -10 feet. The last few days I caught up with them in day liight hours when I tried fishing a hole that was 25 feet in depth. It took all of the anchor rope that was on the little rowboat that came with our rental. Fortunately we had brought an old electric motor that we had for years. The new battery got us through all but two days.
During the week our boy Riley would take rides out to the island on the lake with his kayak. One mid day he went out with his lunch to enjoy it on the scenic beach. He got a real surprise when two swans did their best to get his sandwich. He set a record getting his kayak back to shore. From that point on they seemed to want to be at our beach!
On evenings when I did not want to clean fish until the following morning, I would keep them in a live fish basket. A snapping turtle figured this out and tried to tear the basket apart. Thanks to a local trapping store, I repaired it with aircraft cable, o-bolts, and good old zip ties. This redneck concoction worked.
During the week I caught many bass that were 12 and 13 inches. Finally I caught one on a night crawler out of a weed bed that was over 12 feet down.
Here are some other vacation pictures. I hope that you enjoy them.
