My granddaughter and I participated in the youth hunt this past Saturday. We did not see a deer and there may be several reasons for that along with falling asleep on stand.
1) It was 80 degrees or better. 2) Someone was running a four wheeler much of the day around the edge of our property. 3) Squirrel hunters were seen several times on the state land which abuts our property. 4) A deer hunter walked out and sat down in front of us on state land about 7:40 pm. 5) The acorn crop is very heavy this year so the deer do not need our little plot of wheat and oats. Everything is still green as well.
We had a fun time even though no deer were seen. My granddaughter was disappointed as she has yet to get her first deer. It was especially hard on her as friends sent her photos of the deer that they took. Her boyfriend took a 12 point up by Rose City.
She was really sick on Sunday so our hunt was a one day event. She will be back out with me during the archery and firearm hunts. The old timers in camp gave her some good-natured ribbing. She said that she had a great time in camp and she gave as good as she got. Of course we had hot pulled venison sandwiches for the inaugaral hunting meal Friday night.

Sounds awesome. My remaining youth hunters (nieces) both had too many things to do and their life is their life. OH well.

I always looked at the youth with mixed feelings for several reasons. It is only two days and many times it can be way too hot. Or stormy weather like thunderstorms can wipe out the entire weekend. Another big issue is if one doesn't have farm land to hunt is the ferns are still up and green and are taller than the deer . Even if the deer's head is above them no way to ethically take a shot when the body is covered. I have always found the youth hunt to be much harder that during the regular seasons. Early bow season can be the same way but it goes on forever so it is easier to work around those issues.
