Did Bill Clinton write the QDMA CWD policy? It seems like it covers all bases. This, on paper sound like politispeak. If you desire, read on. However by reading on some readers may me disenfranchised with QDMA. Therefore it would be fortuitous if you even understood.
"Should we shoot most bucks at 1 1/2 years of age to keep them from maturing? In outbreak zones, older bucks are two to four times more likely to have CWD than younger bucks. Therefore, on paper, the best way to combat the disease is to keep density low and the age structure young. That means not allowing bucks or does to mature. However, in reality, hunters are needed to regulate deer populations, and many hunters stay engaged for the opportunity to pursue mature bucks. It is QDMA’s opinion that as long as hunters continue hunting, shooting antlerless deer, and helping keep deer herds in check, then it is more beneficial to have some mature bucks in the affected population than to shoot all bucks at a young age. If mature bucks are scarce, some hunters will become less engaged and shoot fewer antlerless deer. Therefore, QDMA’s recommendation for hunters is to harvest antlerless deer to help reduce density, continue protecting yearling bucks if you desire, but apply increased harvest pressure to all bucks 3½ years or older."

"If mature bucks are scarce, some hunters will become less engaged and shoot fewer antlerless deer."
The reason for MAPR's according to Dr B. is because mature bucks are rare. The average deer hunter may not see a mature deer in his lifetime. Are they scarce or not??? An esteemed Dr insists on stating how check station data is lopsided towards young bucks.
Let's ask QDMA members if they take their big bucks to check stations. Look at all the big buck pictures scattered all over social media. There are some monsters. What percentage of these older bucks have been through a check station? I'd wager my next paycheck it is single digit. Considering the shroud of secrecy surrounding anything big buck, it is not surprising.
Of all of the young deer at check stations how many are there because it is the hunters first deer? How many hunters are there just to get a patch to add to their collection. Sure, some hunters really care that the DNR has the tools to properly manage our deer herd, but only 5% of Michigan deer hunters take the time to have their deer checked. That is larger than most states.
So the QDMA says we have enough mature deer to keep Michigan deer hunters happy.
Amazing.

It's business as usual for the members of QDMA. Let em go let em grow. At least hunters are satisfied now with what they shoot.
