That last two afternoons have found Zoe, Steve (my daughter's relatively new boyfriend), and I out doing some pan fishing. We fished from shore or I should say from a barge belonging to the property association. On Saturday we cast out to the deep water where we thought the water temperature would be cooler and the fish would be toward the bottom. We caught 10 and kept 5 so the bite was really slow. We thought that it might be due to the jet skis and the heat.
Today we returned to the same spot because the rest of the family wanted to swim down the shore a piece. Things were relatively slow again with a bluegill and a catfish caught. Steve was about ready to give up when he dropped his lines over the side of the barge. Fishing picked up immediately. Apparently the fish were under the barge in the shade. We ended up catching 7 bluegill, 1 perch, and 3 catfish. There were 3 or 4 throwbacks. The winning bait was green worms. I had not heard of them before the last two days but we ran out of them. Wax worms caught a couple. On another note Steve bought a box of worms this morning from a different store and when we opened them they were all spoiled. That was a good warning to watch where we buy our bait.
Between the two days there will be a nice meal as I filleted them. The pan fish I scale and then I fillet them. It is a little more time consuming but we like the skins on the pan fish. Not only do we like the flavor but the skin holds the meat together especially in the summer time.
I have one box of worms left but if they are not used by midweek they will go out into De's flower garden! They do not last as I do not have a large enough worm box or a large enough fridge to keep them longer.
Have a real good time fishing and a great time having a meal of them!

That is some fine fishing, Doehead! That will make for a wonderful feast. There is nothing like fresh Michigan fish, potatoes, onions, and greens. Michigan is an outstanding place for fixing good food and having a good time.
